What Is Calcium Chloride Used for in Road Construction?

Calcium chloride (CaCl2) is a highly water-soluble salt that lowers the freezing point of water and readily absorbs moisture from the air. In road applications, it's spread as flakes, pellets, or a liquid solution to melt ice and snow at temperatures well below what plain salt (sodium chloride) can handle, and to keep unpaved road surfaces damp enough that dust doesn't become airborne.

Beyond winter de-icing and dust control, calcium chloride is used as a soil stabilization aid — it draws in and retains moisture in the base layer, helping fine material compact more densely and resist rutting under traffic. It's a standard input for municipalities, county road departments, and contractors managing unpaved or gravel road networks.
